An annual art fair has been praised for revitalising culture in the debt-ridden country of Dubai, according to The Guardian.

Art Dubai, which opened on March 17th, attracted almost a third more visitors than last year with some galleries selling up to 90 per cent of the art on show. Art fairs in Dubai are different to ones in the UK; art showing nudity or obvious political content are banned, and the quality of the art is generally thought to be lower than collectors would expect to find at Basel or London’s Frieze. There were a few noticeable absences at this year’s Art Dubai. A third of last year’s exhibitors didn’t return, including London’s Lisson Gallery and New York’s L&M Arts, but there were still more exhibitors at the art fair than in 2009. A 20 per cent discount in booth rates encouraged many first-time exhibitors to attend, occupying just under half of the booths, according to Bloomberg. There were fears that this year’s art fair would be a flop. The auction price for some contemporary artists’ work halved last year, but confidence seems to be returning to the market after a record 65 million was paid for a Giacometti sculpture in London this February.

Fabio Rossi, of London’s Rossi & Rossi, told Reuters that Art Dubai is “mainly a staging ground for emerging artists” but the fair, which is four years old, is holding its own in the global arena. “It is becoming more serious with a higher level of gallery representation and displays,” he said. “It is up to the audience to step up their game.”

Art dealers seem to agree that there is a future in Gulf-based art fairs. Nicholas Logsdail, Director of London’s Lisson gallery, told Bloomberg: “It’s a part of the world that’s doing its best to enter the 21st century with an enormous amount of enthusiasm and investment and determination. Maybe a bit too fast, but it’s got to happen.”

Fine Art

What Is Fine Art? Technically, fine art defines an art form that was developed primarily for the aesthetics rather than for practical application. Today, the arena of fine art has spread its tentacles wide across the globe, engulfing all those who are passionate about expressing themselves and the world in the form of some art. Historically, the five greater fine arts included sculpture, painting, music, poetry and architecture, of course with the minor arts including dance and drama. While today, fine arts include all the visual and performance arts, including calligraphy, photography, print making, conceptual art, collage, etc.

Unfortunately, fine art as a concept has been greatly misunderstood. Most of us think that fine arts refers to the quality of the art, while in reality, it refers to the discipline’s purity. This is particularly why performing arts like the theatre and ballet are also referred to fine arts. Having said that, the concept of what purity of a discipline is comes to be questioned. Aristotle had once quoted that ‘imitation is one of the finest thing in human nature’ which complements our human ability to stay in harmony with regard to nature and rhythm itself. Thus, fine art is anything whose purity is as close as possible, to being in synchrony with imitation of the human nature. However, this definition can be referred to the field of performing arts only. What Does Fine Art Enclose?Fine art comes to include all the two dimensional works such as illustrations, paintings and drawings, comics, fiber art, print making, photography, calligraphy, mosaics and imaging, as well as the three-dimensional art forms such as conceptual art, sculpting, dance, film and theatre, architecture, games and other art forms. Apart from these, the electronic media, western art music, avant-garde music, creative writing and textiles (as in quilt art) are also included in fine arts.

Of course, distinct and unique pieces of art stand out from different artists and their eras, but what makes their creation a ‘fine art’ is its ability to arouse emotions in the viewer. And these emotions can be anything from sadness and misery to joy and extreme ecstasy. On the contrary, if any piece of art cannot evoke any emotion within the viewer, neither positive nor negative, that piece of art cannot be rightly considered a fine art. Moreover, a genuinely fine art evokes an emotion that is absolutely subjective. The greatest of the artistic compositions do trigger almost same responses from the viewer, yet each individual bears a unique subjective interpretation to the piece.

Role of Fine Art in Lives Today Fine art is one of the best and exceptional forms of expressing oneself and their interpretation of or their reaction to the world around them. However, a creative process such as fine art is equally therapeutic and life affirming. Art therapy and artistic expression through fine arts provides a creative outlet for the youth and is also a viable means of communication. Traumatic events buried within an individual can still be heard through their expression in fine arts and once that is done, a therapist begins working on it. And this is undoubtedly, the most beautiful role of fine art in lives today!

Abstract Wall Art

Can you recall your earliest memory of abstract wall art. Let’s take a minute to reflect on the function of abstract arts throughout the evolution of the art world. Through art’s evolutionary process, we now accept abstract as a fine art style much the same way representational art is.This has happened because we cannot deny the history of the abstract style; it can be followed as far back as the Lascaux cave paintings. These primitive yet sophisticated early abstract paintings and drawings were made with organic dies that were accessible in that time. What’s most intriguing about those paintings was that they were thier attempt to capture the nature of the shape and not simply its appearance.

Thankfully, education of art allowed possibilities to form new opinions of this popular art style. These days they use the terms such “non-objective fine art,” “non-depictive art,” and “non-figurative art” to describe the this style. In the Western world abstract images can be found in many varieties because it illustrates many of the emotions, thoughts, and ideas that an artist notices within themselves as they work. This is one of the biggest qualities of abstract.

It may seem better for us to categorize art into two sections; representational arts and abstract arts. We also understand that a large amount of acceptance was needed for this style to develop as it has. Receiving economical support from buyers was and is absolutely necessary. Such economical support was imperative to the abstract expressionist styles survival because there was a time when this style actually shook the pillars of the art world with its edgy expressions.

Creating great fine art requires that each artist paint in a way that is self revealing. The very nature of abstract artwork is a desirable way for artists to show themselves. This is the exact reason that this style has become so poular. Additionally, it provides many possibilities to add beauty and elegance to any area since it is not difficult for any buyer to find whatever satisfaction they are needing in terms of colors, sizes, and prices.
